Since I heard about homeschooling conventions I have been curious to know what they are about and what benefit would it be for me personally and how it would benefit my homeschool. I had my doubts in attending one, since I’m always reading and educating myself as much as I can about homeschooling. But just as I needed the fellowship with other homeschoolers that I now enjoy, I also need to grow in my knowledge and understanding of what is available for my children and to be a better teacher to them. If a convention is going to broaden my walk of knowledge and will help me improve my experience as a homeschooling rookie, then I do need to attend one of these.
So what happens during a homeschool convention? From what I’ve researched, the possibilities could be endless, but these are the three main activities we could find in one:
1) Experienced speakers leading workshops
2) Exhibition halls: vendors from homeschool curriculum companies, booths with resources for learning, etc.
3) “Socialization” (ok, networking) between homeschooling parents
I’ve heard good testimonies of encouragement, revival, and repurpose from other homeschooling moms who have attended conventions, and they have awaken my interest and curiosity. Interestingly, God has His ways to lead me (of course, when doesn’t He?) and without expecting it, I’ve been given the opportunity to attend my very first homeschooling convention!
I will be attending the Louisiana Delta Homeschool Association Convention this year. When I read the workshops’ topics, I knew that this was an event for me to attend. I’m looking forward to learning in depth about the legal aspects of homeschooling in Louisiana, about teaching techniques, leadership, teaching in the early years (I’m on that boat!), and several other workshops involving nutrition and very importantly, encouragement and grace. There will also be workshops for the higher levels like high school, and on preparing transcripts for college (that would be interesting to listen to as well). I didn’t even expect it, but there will be a special workshop for fathers as well!!

What is another reason? Books!!! I love books, and many of the curriculum companies that interest me will be there in an exhibit hall. I will get to tangibly explore the books offered by Apologia, Abeka, Simply Charlotte Mason, Sonlight, and many others!

At the end of the day, you have the option to bring all the workshops home that you didn’t get to a attend:
I’m also looking forward to meeting like-minded parents, and to feel at ease, knowing that there are many more traveling through this path I have chosen.
Whether you are considering homeschooling and need guidance, are new to it or need a revive to continue your journey, this will be ideal for you to attend.
One more thing, I’ve been given one free ticket to give away to any of my readers and/or followers.

Thank you so much for blogging about the Louisiana Delta Homeschool Association, and the upcoming convention. I want to be sure that your readers understand that the curriculum tables at the convention will be hosted by veteran homeschool moms all of whom have experience with the curricula at their respective table. At next years convention, the sales reps from various curricula companies will be present and selling materials. Thanks again and we can’t wait to see who wins the giveaway.
